Class 5 EVS Activity Report: It’s Electric!

Our Grade 5 students had an electrifying hands-on experience with static electricity in their latest EVS class! They began by rubbing a balloon against a woolen cloth, which caused the balloon to become charged. Similarly, they charged a piece of thin plastic shaped like a ring by rubbing it against the same cloth. The students observed how both the balloon and the plastic ring repelled each other due to static electricity. They had fun experimenting with these materials, creating small sparks, and feeling the “zap” of static electricity in a safe and engaging way.
Next, they explored static electricity by rubbing a plastic ruler against their hair. They were amazed to see how small pieces of paper stuck to the ruler, demonstrating the principles of static charge. This activity introduced the concept of static electricity within the chapter on energy. Through these experiments, the children learned why they sometimes feel a shock when touching metal objects, connecting their classroom experience to real-life situations. The lesson was not only educational but also filled with laughter and curiosity, making the principles of static electricity memorable for all.
